[sticky post] Dramas and Movies

reservoirhyd (pic#80735971)
A list of dramas, movies and tanpatsu for personal reference, or if you really want to know what I watch. I don't know if I want to do this for anime, because my school's anime club usually follows one or two series per term and shows parts of other series to fill in the rest. (Also, I think growing up Asian-American kind of required me to watch anime, so I can't pinpoint - earlier than Sailor Moon, anyway - when I started watching anime.

Cut for lengthCollapse )

A similar master list of fanworks I've done will be up soon.

Today is the twentieth anniversary of my emigration to the United States. I just wanted to mark the occasion.

What is (or was) your college major? Do you use it for your career?

I graduated in June 2009 with a double major in Sociology and Asian American Studies. Of course I haven't used it for my career (as a carehome administrator/insurance agent/former Census enumerator).

B
een one helluva trip so far. After going home to the Philippines for New Years, I finally went to Tokyo (and I'm pretty sure most of my flist knows where this is). I am exhausted, and it felt like I took an arrow to the knee with all the damn walking I did, but there's no city I'd rather render myself almost physically unable to walk in. (Except perhaps Paris of course.)

What is the one song you must sing at karaoke?

View 898 Answers

"And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going," from the musical "Dreamgirls."

Every time I hit a new karaoke joint and they have this, this immediately becomes first-choice song because 1. it feels good to sing 2. it is a good icebreaker and 3. usually no one else has the balls to choose it (which leads back to #1 and #2).

It used to be "Alone" by Heart, but after becoming a regular at certain karaoke joints in SF I felt like I had to expand my repertoire a bit; also, there were a few performances (failed karaoke contest, too many Filipino girls singing it, awesomely done sing-off) that made me feel like I had to lay off that one a bit. This one is a bit higher-level, which appeals to my type-A side, although of course I will only do it when I am confident I can hit it (combination of warm-ups and liquid courage).

Other favourites include "Total Eclipse of the Heart" by Bonnie Tyler (when with friends), "Through the Fire" by Chaka Khan, any Arashi song (when with friends in a private room and/or when backing up fluent-in-Japanese friends) and "Luha" by Aegis. But usually, I like to mix it up and find new songs every week, since my friends and I usually hit up the same three karaoke places.

Oh, and when I'm in a karaoke room I have to finish every session with a droning, Nico-style version of "The Love Boat" just for the lulz.

What’s that one song that always reminds you of the one that got away?

I can think of dozens, but one that sticks out in my mind right now is Alone by Heart.

(But before I continue, a sidenote: I don't know if I should call him the one that got away, because he did get away but he didn't stay away.)
This is why.Collapse )Why it reminds me of this personCollapse )

What’s a bad habit that you really need to quit?

Staying up late. Tonight is a good example of that: I've got a cold and I am going to be liturgist at church tomorrow, yet I'm awake at 2 AM despite needing to wake in about six hours. I just know I am going to be sniffling my entire way through the service, and it won't be because I'm touched by the Spirit or moved by the new pastor's sermon.

Other than that, I also need to work on my road rage (being tailgated and high-beamed by a BMW the brand of vehicles whose drivers always treat me like shit at 1:45 in the morning in zero-visibility fog DOES NOT HELP with that either) and holding grudges against males whom I feel have treated me wrongly (every guy from my stepfather to my first love to certain guy friends to that random yuppie guy in a BMW - different from the douchenozzle half an hour ago- who started yelling at me that I couldn't drive).

On that note, I heard Adele's "Someone Like You" which reminded me of a guy who'd wronged me... followed immediately by Cee-Lo Green's "Fuck You." Best musical pairing EVER.

I'm Just Wild About Harry

So today's the day :( An era is finally put to an end. And with that, I finally sought out to see what House I ought to be in:

The sorting hat says that I belong in Ravenclaw!

Said Ravenclaw, "We'll teach those whose intelligence is surest."

Ravenclaw students tend to be clever, witty, intelligent, and knowledgeable.
Notable residents include Cho Chang and Padma Patil (objects of Harry and Ron's affections), and Luna Lovegood (daughter of The Quibbler magazine's editor).

Take the most scientific Harry Potter Quiz ever created.

Get Sorted Now!

I'm a nerd and usually compared to Hermione, but somewhere along the line I lost her ballsiness and like dark colours, but can also be kind of loopy, like Luna Lovegood. Yup, I'm a Ravenclaw.

Any Potter fans think I should've gotten something different? Or agree completely?

Twin Peaks is my favourite place in San Francisco.Collapse )

And how can you say no to this view?

Twin Peaks

Also, when I feel like a giant shapeless blob like right now , I can remind myself of the time I hiked all the way from the Castro to Twin Peaks. It's only a mile and a half, but it is uphill the whole way, and anyone who's been to San Francisco knows how lethal certain hills can be. Thus I am extremely proud of making it all the way up - not only was it an epic hike by most proportions, but it was an epic hike to my favourite place in California.

Here is the path we took (it stops at Crestline Drive, and then we went up the hill on an unmarked path which I'm not sure we were allowed to take, but took us right to the best spot on the observation deck.

So yes, that is Twin Peaks. I just wrote this because 1. I'm awake and don't know what to do with myself and 2. I needed something to make me happy. This place is one of them.

I'm so glad I can cross "hike to Twin Peaks" off my bucket list.
